I use the rental car option all the time with excellent results (have to turn off the AC for recording takes, but I just turn it all back on full blast between takes) . In a hotel room, you have to turn off the AC and refrigerator too, and a shotgun mic is best. I also will lift up the mattress or sofa and make a fort out of them, stufffed with pillows to get a nice, quiet, deadened space. I have also used a rollaway bed, which when stood on end, can be rolled around easily as a mobile sound baffle. I've even pulled some in from the housekeeping maids or closets to get two upright rollaways to form an instant booth without having to tilt up the mattress. A Do Not Disturb sign is essential, and another trick I've heard is to grab a few more Do Not Disturb signs to put on adjacent rooms so housekeeping doesn't start vacuuming next door while you;re trying to record. Just remember to take them down after your session to ensure the cleanliness of your neighbors' rooms.

Holidays are perfect to turn off all devices, especially the voice. The most dangerous enemy of the voice is the stress. Accepting a voiceover job on vacation always means to exchange dozens of emails with a client. The recording is just the smallest task. Try to record a take on your last business day. Then turn off all your computers and smart phones for 15 days. On your first day after returning from vacation shoot another take. Compare it to the previously recorded. You'll find that you have a new voice. And yes, the car is great for recordings! :-) Happy holidays!

Great points, Jente! I usually just let everyone know that I'll be unavailable while away from my studio, but I just bought a new laptop to take on the road with me for important auditions or little things that don't necessarily NEED to be recorded in my studio. Have a great summer!! :-)
